Family violence program expands scope

11-Jan-2022

The Changing for Good service is expanding its scope to launch two new program streams aimed at helping more men to have violence-free relationships.

The Changing for Good service provides a one-to-one telephone counselling service for men who want to maintain respectful relationships without using violence. The service, which is part of MensLine Australia, aims to support and strengthen relationships with others, improve wellbeing, and increase participation in community life.

The Changing for Good service is launching two new program streams to open it up to more men who want to improve their communication and find better ways to deal with conflict, frustration, anger and disappointment. The programs will help men recognise their trigger events, develop a personal goal and action plan, and understand how their behaviour affects others.

The first stream is the Post Men’s Behaviour Change Program, an intensive six-month telephone counselling program for men who have completed a Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) in the last 12 months and are no longer using physical violence. Professional counsellors will work with the men to help them keep up the strategies they learned in an MBCP and provide support to help strengthen all relationships in their life.

The second stream is the Violence Prevention Program, a high-support two-month telephone counselling program for men who are worried that their thoughts and behaviours may escalate to physical violence. Professional counsellors will work with the men to help them be proactive and learn the tools to develop respectful and healthy relationships.

Changing for Good will help men explore the impact and motivations of their behaviours on others. The Changing for Good counsellors will help men work on the areas they want to improve, whether it is intimate relationships, parenting, friendships or work colleagues.

Both programs are free and voluntary, and no referral is required. Interested participants need to fill out an expression of interest form, which is available on the Changing for Good website.
