On the Line welcomes the mental health investment announced in the 2018 Federal Budget. With one in five Australians experiencing a mental health disorder each year, mental health is a priority for our communities. The investment in mental health is focusing on suicide prevention and research.
Highlights from the Federal Budget
$125 million investment in medical research
Over ten years, $125m will be invested into the Mental Health Research Mission to support the priorities under the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan.
$84 million investment in the Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service will receive $84m for dental and mental health care including employing more psychologists and mental health nurses, to reach more people in rural and regional Australia (where it can be difficult to access mental health services).
$37.6 million investment in suicide prevention after a hospital visit
A $37.6m investment over four years will help to improve follow-up care for people who are discharged from the hospital after a suicide attempt.
$33.8 million investment in Lifeline
A $33.8m boost to support Lifeline over four years will help the crisis support service to answer more calls. They currently receive over one million calls and the funding will help them to answer close to 100% of calls. The funding will also provide coaching and development for the crisis support team.
